Direct Dyes

Direct Dye is a class of dyestuffs that are applied directly to the substrate in a neutral or alkaline bath. They produce full shades on cotton and linen without mordanting and can also be applied to rayon, silk, and wool. Direct dyes give bright shades but exhibit poor washfastness.
The dyeing process with direct dyes is very simple, Direct dyeing is normally carried out in a neutral or slight alkaline dyebath, at or near boiling point , but a separate aftertreatment such as cationic dye fixing , to enhance wet fastness has been necessary for most direct dyeing .
Richest brand direct dyestuff can be widely used especially in the dyeing of all forms of cellulose fiber.
1. Dyeing
- Set the water temperature at 40°C in the dye vat, add dye agent for 0-1g/l, then slowly add the fully dissolved dyestuff prepared ahead.
- Heat to boiling point
- Add neutral salt (No-water mirabilite or ordinary salt)the color remainng agent should be 0-10g/l, and should be added slowly in several times.
- Keep the temperature at the boiling point for 30-50 mins.
- Drain off the liquid, spilling-washing and cold water washing. Note: Add soda for 0.5-2 g/l when dyeing black vsf 600.
Common methods as follows:
In order to get an even dye effect, please see the classification carefully, which is made according to SDC(society of dyers and colourists system).
TYPE A: Belong to disperse dyes high temperature dyes, dye at 120°C.
Under neutral conditions, especially suit for the dyeing of polyester fiber blend fabric.
TYPE B: Salt-made dyes--add neutral salt in several times to control the high effect of even dyeing.
Cold washing, refill clean water to help fix the color, to improve the fastness.
4. Other Dyeing Methods
- Be pressed at 75-95°C
- Add jigger containing neutral salt (No-water mirabilite or ordinary salt) for 10-25g/l
- Running for 20-30 mins
- Cold water washing

-
4.3 Pressing Dyeing and color-fixing
- Prepare the pressing dye liquid following 4.1
- Pressing dyeing at 80°C
- Guide directly into the steam box, steam 3-4 mins at 102-105°C or 2 mins at 120-125°C
- Pass the pressing-dyed cloth through boiling water containing salt of 10g/l
